They are considered to be the absolute masters of acappella singing. In 1982 the Flying Pickets had their first number one hit with Yazoo’s "Only You". Not one of the original cast participates anymore, nevertheless the audience of the Wendlinger 'Zeltspektakel' were beside themselves with joy, when on Sunday evening the five guys from Britain kicked it off with Sheryl Crows "Everyday is a Winding Road".
The organisers of this years "Zeltspektakel" had picked a delicacy for the last evening, because the band is touring Europe until March 2007. With a mixture of originals and covers they won over the 500 spectators very quickly. The Sheryl Crow number was followed by Stephen Stills’ "Love the One You’re With" and "Roxanne" by legendary band The Police, often covered but seldom nearing the original. With his expressive voice Simon Foster gave the song its very own character and was acknowledged for his blues-interpretation with first cheers.
But the Flying Pickets did not only score with their listeners by singing the songs of world famous musicians. The Pickets’ original "When" performed by Dylan Foster grooved tremendously. |

"We love to sing songs by unknown artists. That makes them popular with a larger audience. The next song is by an American singer named Stevie Wonder", was the next announcement. "As" was the title, which the Pickets had chosen from the almost inexhaustible repertoire of Stevie Wonder songs, and which was very courageous, because the version by George Michael and Mary J. Blige already represents a steep 'forward pass'. But the acappella formation from London presented that composition soulfully and perfectly arranged.
The next highlight was "Long Train Running" by the Doobie Brothers, guided by the vocal beats of Andrea Figallo, and exactly like with the previous number "Billie Jean", the arrangement pounded from the first to the last note.
Due to the fact that the vocal artists celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Flying Pickets next year, an hommage to the 80's could not be missed. "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis served this purpose fully and completely. Some arrangements sounded so complex that one asked oneself, how much singing practice might actually be behind the songs. "We do rehearse often", admitted Andy Laycock. "Whilst on tour however, the gigs are enough exercise, because singing can be quite exhausting."

"We have written so many well known songs that world famous singers steal them and act as if they belonged to them", said the guys in advance of their version of Robbie Williams "Let Me Entertain You". Pretty barefaced, but it worked with the public.
The highlight of the show however came with "Black Betty", a song, which was originally sung acappella, and became popular by the dance remix of Ram Jam and the retake of Tom Jones. Michael Henry, who made some of his announcements in surprisingly good German, put up a big front and got repeatedly enthusiastic raptures from the people in the big top.
Dylan Fosters hip motion with "Living la Vida Loca" received special applause, and the Australian proved that one does not essentially have to come from Latin America to put the ladies in ecstasy.
Each band member had his solo parts and so all could prove that they are masters of their craft.

The old Bangles number "Eternal Flame" took a little time to get used to it. One’s ear still remembered the tender voices of the four ladies from New York and suddenly everything was completely different, powerful, masculine, more beat. Thus some will have listened attentively there. But the Flying Pickets proved, perhaps particularly with this composition, that in music everything is possible and one can be surprised beyond one’s own 'borders of taste' sometimes.
Andy Laycock explained that actually every song can be rearranged to an acappella version. The most important criterion for the band were that the selected song meets the approval of each member in the formation. There were no technical criteria. Some of the Pickets studied music and composition, others come from acting which becomes apparent especially with the stage show.
And "Only You"? The Flying Pickets classic came as an encore, for which the boys were asked to return for quite a long time. But they topped it with "Mama Lou" from Les Humphreys and in the end they once again burned off a firework of their art of singing and performance.
And then it was all happening in the Wendlinger big top, the people danced hilariously and again and again the audience applauded.
Anyone who missed the British band’s show, really missed out. The Flying Pickets fascinated at the “Wendlinger Zeltspektakel” with acappella music.

Sie gelten als die absoluten Meister des A-cappella-Gesangs. 1982 hatten die Flying Pickets ihren ersten Nummer-eins-Hit mit dem Yazoo-Titel „Only you“. Von der ursprünglichen Besetzung ist zwar niemand mehr dabei, trotzdem war das Publikum des Wendlinger Zeltspektakels vollkommen aus dem Häuschen, als die fünf Jungs aus England am Sonntagabend mit Sheryl Crows „Everyday is a winding road“ loslegten.
Da hatten die Veranstalter für den letzten Abend des diesjährigen Zeltspektakels natürlich einen richtigen Leckerbissen an Land gezogen, denn die Gruppe tourt bis zum März 2007 durch ganz Europa. Mit einer Mischung aus Eigenproduktionen und Coversongs hatten sie die 500 Zuschauer schnell für sich eingenommen. Auf „Sheryl Crow“ folgten die Nummern „Love the one You’re with“ von Stephen Stills und das oft gecoverte, aber selten an das Original heranreichende „Roxane“ von der legendären Band Police. Simon Foster gab mit seiner ausdrucksstarken Stimme dem Lied jedoch einen ganz eigenen Charakter und wurde für seine Blues-Interpretation mit den ersten Jubelschreien bedacht.

Doch nicht nur mit den Liedern weltbekannter Musiker konnten die Flying Pickets bei ihren Zuhörern punkten. Die von Dylan Foster vorgetragene Picket-Eigenkreation „When“ groovte ganz gewaltig.
„Wir lieben es, die Lieder unbekannter Interpreten zu singen. Das macht sie bei einem größeren Publikum bekannt. Das nächste Lied, das wir singen, ist von einem amerikanischen Sänger namens Stevie Wonder“, lautete die nächste Ankündigung. „As“ lautete der Titel, den die Pickets aus dem beinahe unerschöpflichen Repertoire von Stevie-Wonder-Songs ausgewählt hatten, und das war schon deshalb ganz schön mutig, weil bereits die Version von George Michael und Mary J. Blige eine steile Vorlage darstellt. Doch die A-cappella-Formation aus London präsentierte dieses Stück gefühlvoll und perfekt arrangiert.
Ein weiteres Highlight war „Long train running“ von den Doobie Brothers, bei dem die vocal beats von Andrea Figallo, genau wie beim vorausgegangenem „Billie Jean“, das Arrangement von der ersten bis zur letzten Note hämmerten. Da die Vokalartisten im nächsten Jahr das 25-jährige Jubiläum der Flying Pickets feiern, durfte eine Hommage an die 80er-Jahre nicht fehlen. „Power of Love“ von Huey Lewis erfüllte diesen Zweck voll und ganz. Manche Arrangements klangen so komplex, dass man sich fragte, wie viel Gesangspraxis eigentlich hinter den Songs steckt. „Wir üben schon oft“, gab Andy Laycock zu. „Solange wir auf Tour sind, ist der Auftritt allerdings Übung genug, denn auch Singen kann ganz schön anstrengend sein.“
„Wir haben so viele berühmte Lieder geschrieben, dass andere weltberühmte Sänger sie uns klauen und so tun, als gehörten sie ihnen“, schickten die Jungs ihrer Version von Robbie Williams’ „Let me entertain you“ voraus. Ganz schön frech, aber beim Publikum kam es an.
Der Höhepunkt der Show kam jedoch mit „Black Betty“, einem Song, der in seiner ursprünglichen Form bereits a cappella gesungen wurde, jedoch durch den Dance-remix von Ram Jam und die Neuaufnahme von Tom Jones populär wurde.. Michael Henry, der manche seiner Ankündigungen in überraschend gutem Deutsch machte, zog eine tolle Show ab und entlockte den Leuten im Zirkuszelt immer neue Begeisterungsstürme.
Einen Sonderapplaus erhielt Dylan Fosters Hüftschwung bei „Living la vida loca“, und der Australier bewies damit, dass man nicht unbedingt aus Lateinamerika kommen muss, um die Damenwelt in Ekstase zu versetzen.
Jedes Bandmitglied hatte seine Soloparts und so konnten alle beweisen, dass sie Meister ihres Faches sind.
Etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig war die alte Bangles-Nummer „Eternal Flame“. Da hatte man noch die zarten Stimmen der vier Ladies aus New York im Ohr und plötzlich war alles ganz anders, kraftvoll, männlich, mehr Beat. So mancher wird da aufgehorcht haben. Doch die Flying Pickets bewiesen, vielleicht besonders bei diesem Stück, dass in der Musik alles möglich ist und man sich manchmal über die eigenen geschmacklichen Grenzen hinaus überraschen lassen kann.
Andy Laycock erklärte denn auch, dass sich eigentlich jedes Lied in eine A-cappella-Version umarrangieren lasse. Das wichtigste Kriterium für die Band sei, dass das ausgewählte Lied jedem Bandmitglied gefalle. Technische Kriterien gebe es nicht. Einige der Pickets haben Musik und Komposition studiert, andere kommen dagegen aus dem Schauspielfach, was sich bei der Bühnenshow natürlich bemerkbar macht.
Und „Only you“? Der Flying-Pickets-Klassiker kam als Zugabe, zu der sich die Jungs allerdings lange bitten ließen. Dafür setzten sie mit „Mama Lou“ von Les Humphreys noch einen drauf und brannten so zum Schluss noch mal ein Feuerwerk ihrer Sanges- und Performance-Kunst ab. Da ging im Wendlinger Zirkuszelt die Post ab, die Leute tanzten ausgelassen und immer wieder brandete Szenenapplaus auf. Wer die Show der britischen Band verpasst hatte, hatte etwas verpasst. Die Flying Pickets faszinierten beim Wendlinger Zeltspektakel mit A-cappella-Musik.
