Köppern EXPLOSIVE START WITH THE FLYING PICKETS

The singing of the man wearing the blue Hawaiian shirt is breathtaking. "Roxanne", he belts out into the microphone, "you don't have to put on the red light". It’s Simon Foster, member of the famous British acappella group Flying Pickets. The five vocalists gave a guest performance in the recently renovated civic centre on Monday evening. And the audience were swept off their feet.

The sound was so outstanding that some of the listeners would almost have believed the rumour about an electronic drum machine behind the curtain. They almost did until Andrea Figallo, the Italian with the Pickets, showed them how percussion is imitated only with one’s voice and gentle knocking on the chest and the microphone. With the Police’s classic song "Roxanne" he alone generated the background music.

"Billie Jean" saw all five on stage again. Michael Henry was in the focus now. The dark-skinned singer with the blue muscle shirt sang like Michael Jackson, and he also spoke German. "Geht alles gut mit Ihnen?", he asked with a broad smile. Then his large eyes looked sadly at the spectators and he said: "Ich habe keine Liebe in meinem Leben, aber ich suche noch." Then he impishly blinked at a pretty girl: "Später vielleicht?"

Now it was Andy Laycock’s turn. The fair-haired man put on a mysterious face and alluded to the Halloween evening: October 31st is dangerous. Weird things might happen.

The uncanny Sting song "Moon Over Bourbon Street" matched perfectly. Figallo accompanied it with an imaginary trumpet.

And when Dylan Foster, the fifth of the federation, rapped, the percussion singer again transformed his voice into a drum.

They continued with "Let Me Entertain You". And now the inspired public applauded in time with the beat. After this, Simon Foster was in full cry. First the Superman Song, then he pitched “Without Love" and gasped strongly, in order to continue with strength: "were would you be now?" One could hear hardly enough of this outstanding voice and it’s almost unbelievable volume.

Then it turned all romantic, The Bangles’ "Eternal Flame" was next. "Close your eyes, give me your hand", sang the two Fosters together with Henry. And when the band wanted to bring the concert to an end after Kool & the Gang’s "Celebration", the public refused. With incessant applause the 260 guests demanded three encores. And they got them. Of course "Only You" could not be missing there, the Yazoo hit, which made the Pickets famous in 1982, and Les Humphries catchy tune "Mama Loo".

Next year the group will present their jubilee programme in Germany, explained Figallo after the concert. The Pickets will be celebrating their 25th stage anniversary. Not one singer from that time participates anymore. But that doesn’t reduce the pleasure while listening: The civic centre audience bounced home.

And the Pickets were pleased with their audience. "Because of the tremendous responsiveness of the people", said Figallo. "we’d love to come back." It was an honour for the band to perform the first concert in the redecorated hall. Surely next time the mirrors will be hanging on the walls of the artists changing rooms. Those were still missing on Monday. But it seemed that everything else in the new civic centre auditorium had been fixed in time, even the red velvet stage-curtain.
